The Sisterhood
The initiative focuses on building positive relationships between African-Canadian and Caribbean young women aged 11-18 from the Crescent Town community. Participants engage in weekly workshops and activities with emphasis on positive female to female relationships.
Workshops have focused on a variety of themes related to life skills, personal hygiene, self-reflection, female violence, personal finance and community development. The initiative has created opportunities for young women to better understand themselves, their peers and advocate for change within the community and the Toronto District School Board.
Seven young women serve as Sisterhood's core group. Two participants from the core group have been hired to assist with program delivery.
The members of Sisterhood planned and delivered a Saturday morning Breakfast Club for community members, providing an opportunity for participants to cook nutritional meals and give back to their community.
The initiative is currently working with its trustee, Warden Woods Community Centre, to incorporate Sisterhood as a core program within the organization. Sisterhood is a member of the Young Women's Legacy Initiative.
