Lost Lyrics

Lost Lyrics is an alternative educational initiative that uses hip-hop to engage youth aged 11-17 from Jane-Finch and Malvern. Youth participate in two weekly sessions over a six-month period. Participants discuss themes in self-identity, sexuality, hood politics, ideas of success and healthy relationships.

Participants are also connected to other special projects, such as a three-day music video camp, mask making and three-day photography training camps. A group of volunteers assists with in-class activities and peer mentorship is provided among older and younger students. Participants have played a strong role in determining curriculum, supports and special projects.

Since receipt of YCF funding in 2007, 40 youth have participated in Lost Lyrics activities. The initiative's focus on self-identity and community has helped to cultivate and promote positive identity as African-Canadian youth.

The initiative has successfully created a safe space for youth from different neighbourhoods to work, train and perform together. Opportunities for students to showcase their talents at several community events has given them a greater sense of community and self-confidence.

The organization has received additional funding from the Laidlaw Foundation to train volunteers to participate in class, thus building the capacity of Lost Lyrics as a sustainable youth-led initiative.
