The African Canadian Legal Clinic's Lawrence Heights Awareness Program (LHAP) is a youth-led initiative focused on equipping young African Canadians with the knowledge and skills to advocate for themselves within society. Youth from the Lawrence Heights community were hired to receive extensive training and create a series of educational workshops that encourage critical thinking and examination.
Five youth from Lawrence Heights completed the program in 2008. They were hired to receive extensive training to create a series of educational, youth-driven workshops. In addition, they delivered these workshops to their peers, which engaged an additional 65 youth within Lawrence Heights and several other priority neighbourhoods.
The participants have developed leadership skills, increased their awareness of African heritage and the criminal justice system, broadened their networks, met positive African Canadian role models, increased their knowledge of community services available, and increased their confidence and self-esteem.
